Wellness Exams & Vaccines in Arlington, TX

Yearly Care That Catches Problems Early

Once a year, you should take your pet in for a check-up. Pets age faster than we do, and many health problems, from dental disease to heart murmurs to early kidney changes, show up on an exam long before a pet acts sick. A yearly wellness visit is the simplest way to find them while they are easier to treat.

D'Anne R. Stephens, DVM, and a technician examining a small dog during a wellness visit

At Park Plaza Animal Clinic, Dr. Stephens and Dr. Putnam check your pet from head to tail, keep vaccines current and talk through parasite prevention, diet and behavior. Our wellness packages bundle the most common services at one set price.

Dog Vaccines

Core vaccines (recommended for every dog)

  • Rabies: Required by Texas law for dogs and cats by four months of age. Rabies is fatal and can spread to people.
  • DHPP: Distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus), parainfluenza and parvovirus in one vaccine. Parvo is still a common and often deadly disease in unvaccinated puppies.
  • Bordetella: Helps protect against kennel cough. Required by most boarding facilities, groomers, daycares and training classes.
  • Leptospirosis: A bacterial disease spread through water and soil contaminated by the urine of wildlife such as raccoons, opossums and rodents. Lepto can damage the kidneys and liver, and it can spread to people. Dogs that drink from puddles, visit parks or spend time outdoors in North Texas are at risk.

We recommend this package because wildlife now lives in our backyard.

Cat Vaccines

  • Rabies: Required by Texas law, including for indoor cats.
  • FVRCP: Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia. Panleukopenia is the feline version of parvo and is often fatal in unvaccinated kittens.
  • Feline Leukemia (FeLV): Recommended for kittens and for cats that go outdoors or live with other cats. We recommend FIV/Leukemia testing before the first Leukemia vaccine.

Parasite Prevention in North Texas

Our mild winters mean mosquitoes, fleas and ticks are active for most of the year, so prevention works best year-round.

  • Heartworm: Spread by mosquitoes. Prevention is as simple as giving a monthly dose of heartworm preventive medication, while treating an established infection can be lengthy, costly, and physically demanding for your dog. Dogs should be heartworm tested before starting or restarting prevention.
  • Fleas and ticks: Fleas cause itching, skin allergies and tapeworms. Ticks carry diseases that affect dogs and people.
  • Intestinal parasites: Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Some intestinal parasites can also be transmitted to humans, particularly young children, making routine screening and prevention especially important. An annual fecal examination helps detect intestinal parasites, even when your pet shows no obvious symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Texas law requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age and kept current after that. We give you a rabies certificate at the visit.

Yes. Rabies is required by law for indoor cats too, and bats occasionally get into homes. Panleukopenia can be carried inside on shoes and clothing, and indoor cats still escape, board and visit groomers.

Most dogs do well with Canine Plus with Lepto. If your dog spends time outdoors, at parks or around wildlife, we recommend the package with Leptospirosis.

Mild reactions, such as soreness or temporary fatigue, may occur and typically resolve within a day or two. Serious reactions are rare. Call us right away if you see facial swelling, hives, repeated vomiting or trouble breathing after a vaccine, and tell us about any past reaction so we can adjust the plan.
