Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Spaying or neutering is an important part of responsible pet care and can provide lifelong health and behavioral benefits.

It may help reduce the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections, prevent unwanted litters, and decrease behaviors such as roaming, marking, and some hormone-related behaviors.

Our Spay & Neuter Services

Every pet is different, so we take an individualized approach to surgical care.

  • Dog and cat spays (females)
  • Anesthesia & careful monitoring
  • Dog and cat neuters (males)
  • Pain management
  • Pre-surgical examinations
  • Post-operative care & recovery instructions

Spaying & Neutering Dogs

Your dog’s age, breed, size, health, and lifestyle all matter when deciding the appropriate time for surgery.

Our veterinarians will discuss your dog’s individual needs and make a recommendation based on what is best for your pet.

Spaying & Neutering Cats

Spaying or neutering your cat can provide important health benefits while also helping prevent unwanted litters and certain hormone-related behaviors.

Our veterinary team will evaluate your cat before surgery and provide individualized anesthesia, monitoring, pain management, and recovery care.

What Happens on Surgery Day

  • Pre-surgical exam: We examine your pet and answer your questions before anything is scheduled.
  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork: Run with our in-house lab to check organ function before anesthesia.
  • Anesthesia and monitoring: An anesthesia plan matched to your pet’s age, breed, size and health, with careful monitoring throughout the procedure.
  • Surgery: A spay removes the ovaries and uterus. A neuter removes the testicles. Ask us whether our surgical cutting laser is a good fit for your pet’s procedure.
  • Pain management: Pain control before, during and after surgery, with medication to go home when needed. We recommend Phovia Light Therapy to support incision healing when appropriate.
  • Recovery and discharge: Your pet is watched closely as they wake up, and you go home with written aftercare instructions.

Short-Nosed Breeds and Surgery

English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds need extra planning for anesthesia because of their airways. Dr. Stephens has a special interest in these breeds, and we watch them closely until they are fully awake and breathing comfortably.

Preparing for Surgery

The night before

  • Withhold food after the time we give you. Water is fine unless we tell you otherwise.

Recovery at home

  • Keep your pet calm and limit running, jumping and rough play for the period we recommend, usually 10 to 14 days.
  • Keep the incision clean and dry. No baths or swimming until we say it is okay.
  • Use the e-collar (cone). Licking is the most common cause of incision problems.
  • Check the incision daily for redness, swelling or discharge.
  • Give pain medication exactly as prescribed.
  • Call (817) 277-1195 if you notice swelling, discharge, an open incision, vomiting or low energy that does not improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your dog’s age, breed, size, health and lifestyle. Large and giant breeds are often spayed or neutered later than small breeds because sex hormones affect bone and joint development. We will make a recommendation for your dog.

Most cats are spayed or neutered at around six months of age, before the first heat cycle and before marking behaviors start.

It is one of the most common surgeries in veterinary medicine, and serious complications are uncommon. We lower the risk further with a pre-surgical exam, careful anesthesia monitoring and pain management.

No. Your pet will still be your pet. Hormone-driven behaviors like roaming and marking often decrease. Metabolism slows a little after surgery, so we may suggest adjusting food portions to prevent weight gain.

There is no health benefit to having a litter before spaying. Spaying before the first heat cycle gives the greatest protection against mammary cancer.

Cost depends on species, size, sex and your pet’s health. Call (817) 277-1195 for an estimate.
